Engaging with Memphis
Iris Orchestra’s commitment to Greater Memphis is an integral and active part of its mission. Iris’ Community Outreach and Engagement Programs partner with local schools, hospitals, and performance venues to bring the world-class musicians that make up the orchestra into the community it calls home. Included among these many partners are GPAC Youth Symphony Orchestra, and the University of Memphis Rudi E. Scheidt School Of Music. This coming season will bring new opportunities for Iris to engage the Greater Memphis Community through the Family Concert Series and design of a multifaceted curriculum to be offered to its existing and new school partners.
Iris Orchestra achieves excellence in the classroom as well as on stage. In the days leading up to each Iris concert, musicians from the orchestra —and guest artists — meet and perform throughout our community. We regularly go to St Jude Children’s Hospital and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. We schedule concerts at senior living communities from downtown to Germantown. And we go into schools with an approved curriculum to teach and encourage budding musicians. Although these are generally private events, Iris never charges for these events. It is our way of thanking the people who make it possible for Iris to continue on our mission. Each time Iris Orchestra takes the stage, the musicians have performed for as many as 1,000 people during the preceding week.
